Frequently Asked Questions |
1- How did Tina get her scar?
Tina addressed it in a Nov. 25, 2001 NY
Times article. "She started as a co-anchor for Weekend Update with a cast member, Jimmy Fallon,
last year, wearing her navy suit and trademark glasses. Her other trademark is a scar
that runs along the left side of her face, although she won't discuss it. "It's a childhood
injury that was kind of grim," she said. "And it kind of bums my parents out for me to
talk about it."

FallonFey.com be gone since Jimmy has left?
No.
6- What were the Primetime Extras
(aka
Thursday Night Live)?
Thursday Night Live was an abbreviated
version of SNL which aired from 8:40-9pm so NBC could compete against Survivor during
February Sweeps 2001. There were two Primetime Extras, which aired on Feb. 1,
2001 and Feb. 8, 2001. These Updates will most likely not be aired again on NBC or Comedy Central.
On Superbowl Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003,
NBC had a similar program called the SNL Weekend
Update Half-Time Show. It was 30 minutes, with one commercial
break, and had recurring characters, and sketches within the confines of the
Weekend Update format.
7- Were Jimmy & Tina ever in a non-Update skit together?
Check out the Sketches
section.
8- Why isn't Tina in sketches more often?
Tina doesn't have time to prepare for
acting in sketches because she is SNL's head writer and is busy writing most of
Update. As of late she occasionally pops up in sketches
in small roles. The first sketch where she was the actual star was as Paula
Zahn from the Eric McCormack show. Since it is a rarity
to see Tina outside Update, here are the sketches she has appeared in:

Ashley Olsen.
12- What happened to Colin Quinn?
There are conflicting reports.
While some articles insist he left on his own, I was told his contract wasn't renewed
(ala Chris Parnell, Jerry Minor) for the
2000-2001 season by a friend of his. Interesting fact about Colin's Update: Tina Fey wrote for him when he first took
over for Norm MacDonald in Jan '98. As of March 2003, he hosts his own
show on Comedy Central, "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn."
13- Who else auditioned for Update after Colin Quinn left?
Ana Gasteyer and Chris Parnell
auditioned as a duo. Jeffrey Ross and Kevin Brennan auditioned solo.
Tina first auditioned solo by request of Lorne Michaels.
14- Do Jimmy & Tina write their own jokes?
Yes, however, there are
additional writers for Weekend Update, including: Steve Higgins, Matt
Murray, Michael Shoemaker, and Michael Schur. Tina's rants are her own. Jimmy
has said in an interview that they share jokes on occasion. Tina has said
that many of the silly bits they do come from Jimmy.
15- Has Tina ever been seen without her glasses on Update?
Yup. The Dana
Carvey episode was the first and only time Tina didn't wear her glasses on
Update. She had contacts in because she was supposed to be in a sketch
that night, but it got cut after dress rehearsal. Tina read the newsgroup
response after this episode and explains "Four teenagers on the internet
wanted me to put my glasses back on." While she doesn't wear
her glasses in sketches she has been wearing them in press photos and interviews
for recognition. Tina also briefly took her glasses off for a joke in
the Katie Holmes
episode, and again in the Ian McKellen episode where
she is about to fight Tonya Harding.
16- Whose voice is that during Update intro?
Amy Poehler currently does the
voice-over; Chris Parnell did it for the 2000-2001 season.

20- Was the Ian McKellen
kiss planned?
What was adlibbed?
Yes, the kiss as well as Jimmy's
"shave" and "knighted" lines were done exactly the same in
dress rehearsal. The only line which was adlibbed was when he said
"...or did I just get queened?" Tina was as shocked as we were
judging by her response.

Conan O'Brien Update was the shortest
at 4½ minutes.
Cameron Diaz Update was the longest
at nearly 16 minutes.
The average Update runs 8 minutes.
22- Where have I seen the "Nerd Alert!" bit before?
Jimmy & Tina did not invent the
"Nerd Alert!" bit. They seem to have combined two previous
similar bits for the Ellen DeGeneres WU bit. The phrase "Geek
Test" was used in a similar context, in a '96 episode of Newsradio (Coda).
Also, in Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, they use the
phrase, "Nerd Alert."

Liotta)
